Learn about what it means to be a
credit union and how to become
involved with the Kaua’i FCU
Why credit union?
Credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives built on ‘people helping people’ principles. Democratically owned, credit unions don’t have outside stockholders so our success is our members’ success. That means that earnings get passed on to our members in the form of higher dividends, lower loan rates, and lower service fees.
Being a Kaua‘i credit union means we are rooted where we live. We invest in financial education, training, and information for the people of this island. We are committed to growing and building our community through charitable efforts here on Kaua‘i. Alongside our ohana, neighbors, and friends, we will make this happen together.
In 1947, we started a credit union for employees of the territory of Hawaii and the county of Kaua‘i. Our goal was not only to provide county, state, and federal government employees and their families with basic financial needs but also to invest in and grow the quality of life on the island.
Over 70 years later, we’re still committed to our goal. Kaua‘i Federal Credit Union continues to help the people of Kaua‘i by keeping our money on the island for a stronger financial future for our people. We offer our members the financial services and products that are right for them at preferable rates and at little or no cost, ensuring the wellness and wealth of future generations.
Become a Volunteer
Credit unions are unique, not-for-profit, cooperative financial institutions owned by their members and guided by volunteers. As a not-for-profit organization, volunteers play important roles in our success. Therefore, Kaua‘i Federal Credit Union is always looking for dedicated volunteers from within our membership to help serve in a variety of volunteer capacities. Volunteers serve without monetary compensation.
Who should apply to be a credit union volunteer?
To be a credit union volunteer requires integrity, a commitment of time, a willingness to learn, the discipline to carry out specific duties, and a desire to serve. Some basic expectations of a credit union volunteer are:

Nurture The Community
Be part of nurturing the credit union philosophy of “people helping people.”
Board of Directors
The Board of Directors meets monthly and consists of volunteers who oversee that all credit union policies are followed, establish and monitor the credit union’s strategic plan and ensure that the credit union operates safely and securely. The Board of Directors’ role is to be accountable for the credit union’s actions and to ensure the long-term security and viability of the credit union by making decisions in the best interest of the credit union and the entire membership.
The PR Committee meets quarterly and supports the credit union’s efforts to encourage education and community outreach. Activities include the Annual Membership Meeting, Annual Scholarship Program, Youth Month, Farm Bureau Fair, International Credit Union Day, and other community activities.
The Supervisory Committee is a group of volunteers here to ask the tough questions while ensuring that the credit union follows current policies and procedures and holds Kauaʻi FCU to the utmost operating standards.
